Vilanculos, Mozambique

Extreme tides and a full moon made the sea completely vanish during the low tide on this slow peaceful Mozambican village called Vilanculos. The ocean literally empties for some hours, connecting the near islands of Bazaruto to the mainland of Vilanculos.

You could literally walk miles into what was hours before “the bottom of the sea”. Boats are left stranded waiting patiently the return of the sea to be able to navigate once again.

While the sea comes back, this woman looks for crabs stirring the sand with her feet in “the bottom of the sea” for selling them at the local fish market.
