Snowfall of the Century in Madrid

The city stopped. The brake was pulled. But… “the city never stops” they said. We need to work, we need to go to, we need… It stops. Nature doesn’t care. Or it does?

Nature had to hurt itself to finally invade with greenery the concrete with its precious branches broken by the weight of the snow. Had to put a layer of white, to cover the black and stop the neverending transit of suffocating wheeled machines.

“What a mess, what a disaster” they said.

But in the chaos, I saw smiles. I saw playfulness. I saw how pedestrian humans took over the reign of cars transiting through their once dominated main roads. And it was not even to continue the city life. They stopped. Sleds, snowmen, ballfights. They stopped for a moment, raised their sight and looked at a different city. A city invaded by nature that released them from their neverending and unquestionable cycle.

The city had a day off and suddenly the humans peaked out as creatures after the storm has passed. But the storm continued. The bad weather brought leisure, brought connection, brought laughs and excitement and a day off to the city that never wants to stop.

People were for a moment free. Nature continued its city halt. We saw in front of the mirror our vulnerability, our fragility. Us the ones who can´t afford to stop. We were stopped. Because Nature doesn´t care, or it does?

Madrid got the biggest snowfall in more than 50 years bringing the whole city to a halt.

Do you think we have to stop more often?
