This tree is about 900 years old. It’s a strange feeling—standing face to face with something that has witnessed centuries pass. Trees like this have endured the rise and fall of empires, the unfolding of history, all while remaining untouched in a peaceful, secluded desert. Alone. Detached.
Now, it is no longer alive, yet its skeleton remains—a reminder of nature’s resilience and beauty. The wood has been perfectly preserved, thanks to the extreme dryness of the climate.
This photo was taken in Deadvlei Salt Flat, a place that feels like it belongs to another world. Scattered across the landscape, skeletal trees stand frozen in time, surrounded by colossal sand dunes. Capturing this image with a telephoto lens against the backdrop of the dune created the effect of a tree standing alone in an almost otherworldly orange expanse.
