We are deep in the Cambodian jungle. It has been pouring all night. The path down from the hill into the thick vegetation is nothing but a muddy slide. We’re already bruised and covered in dirt from countless slips and falls. Fire ants have been feasting on our legs and feet. Beach flip-flops, as hiking gear, aren’t helping much.
It’s early in the day, and we are already completely soaked. Yet somehow, we can’t wipe the smiles off our faces. Dense, lush vegetation surrounds us, wrapping us in thick, humid air. Green—everywhere. Layers upon layers of trees, vines, and foliage create an impenetrable wall. We can barely see a few meters ahead. Silence. Only the sound of raindrops tapping against thousands of green leaves fills the air.
“Fiuuuuuu,” our guide whistles into the jungle. Excitement ripples through the group. We glance at each other, exchanging nervous giggles, unsure of what to expect. No one speaks, but the childlike thrill is evident in our smiles.
Another whistle cuts through the jungle air. Again, we look at each other. Then—”Crunch, creak.” A sudden noise. Cracks and snapping branches echo in the distance. Something stirs beyond the dense curtain of greenery. The jungle is thick, obscuring our view. But something is coming. The rustling grows louder. Trees sway, branches tremble. Footsteps. The crackling of leaves draws closer.

And then, it emerges. Right in front of us. A giant brown figure, almost otherworldly. An elephant steps out from the depths of the jungle. Massive. Covered in mud. Its trunk swings from side to side, searching. The sheer presence of this creature feels surreal. The brown earth caked onto its skin gives it an ancient, mythical aura.
“Where are my bananas, you stunned and speechless humans? Come on, wake up and feed me!”
The Mondulkiri Project rescues elephants from exploitative practices, giving them the chance to live and roam freely in the jungle where they belong.
